From my devotions…

When two years had passed, Felix was succeeded by Porcius Festus, but because Felix wanted to grant a favor to the Jews, he left Paul in prison. Acts 24:27

The heart of the king is in God’s hand and God chose to not to stir Felix’s heart. For two years, a dedicated and skilled church planter remained sidelined in jail.

God does not worship productivity; not even productivity in ministry.  He values his name and loves his children, but he is not addicted to efficiency (as viewed from a capitalistic worldview).  This is not to say that we are not to redeem the time, but that his ways are higher than our ways.

Prayer: Lord, if you saw fit to assign Moses 80 years of preparation, Jesus 30 years of obscurity before a three-year ministry, and Paul a two-year stay in prison, then I will gladly accept your assignment of a year in preparation before resuming a more public ministry. I will also gladly accept your assignment to minister to smaller numbers if that is your will.  By faith, I believe you have granted my request that I simply be somewhere that you deem strategic ministering in a manner consistent with the way you made me.  Amen.

  1. Great thoughts, Andy! They jogged the lyrics of a hymn in my mind.

In the harvest field now ripened
    There’s a work for all to do;
Hark! the voice of God is calling
    To the harvest calling you.

Little is much when God is in it!
Labor not for wealth or fame.
    There’s a crown—and you can win it,
If you go in Jesus’ Name.

Does the place you’re called to labor
Seem too small and little known?
It is great if God is in it,
And He’ll not forget His own.

Little is much when God is in it!
Labor not for wealth or fame.
    There’s a crown—and you can win it,
If you go in Jesus’ Name.

Are you laid aside from service, (Even temporarily)
Body worn from toil and care? (Or brain fried from language learning)
You can still be in the battle,
In the sacred place of prayer.

Little is much when God is in it!
Labor not for wealth or fame.
    There’s a crown—and you can win it,
If you go in Jesus’ Name.

When the conflict here is ended
And our race on earth is run,
He will say, if we are faithful,
    “Welcome home, My child—well done!”

Little is much when God is in it!
Labor not for wealth or fame.
    There’s a crown—and you can win it,
If you go in Jesus’ Name.

  2. I’m still praying. The words of this hymn ring true. Meditate on these and words from scripture. There are no mistakes in GOD’s work. One step at a time. It is different from what you are used to, but there is a purpose for all that GOD allows. One step at a time. ~K~

  3. Praying for you guys! God has a purpose for why He has put you there, and I will never forget something that I heard a couple of years ago (maybe even under your preaching), that God defines success as faithfulness. I have never forgotten that, and it is very encouraging to keep in mind when our ministries don’t seem ‘successful’ or ‘important’ in the world’s view. This post is a good reminder of that, and I’m praying God will encourage your family this week by showing you another glimmer of His purpose for you in Portugal!
