My New Job as an Ice Cream Tester

I’ve been really challenged by one of books on our ABWE Required Reading list.  In Let the Nations Be Glad, John Piper writes, “[God’s] goal is the gladness of his people, because God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in him.  Delight is a higher tribute than duty.”  I am a very task-oriented person.  My wife has often told me that I have an over-developed sense of duty.  Perhaps that’s why I resisted Piper’s claim.  However, I can’t deny that God has on several occasions basically said to me, “Andy – you’re not happy enough for me.”  God wants more joy and celebration in my life.  Wow – what a thing to have to work on.  That’s like getting a job as an ice cream tester!  That’s not work, that’s pure pleasure! To think that I could bring glory to God, not just by working for him, but by enjoying him so much that the joy just oozes out of me.  What a thought!

  1. I am the same type of person. Finally in my older years, I am getting it. The “it” is that I need to love GOD in and through all that I do.Enjoy what HE brings into my life everyday, knowing that HE has it all under HIS control, even when it doesn’t fit my to do list.
Hopefully, tomorrow I will remember this! 🙂
